Man Damages US Military Aircraft with Axe at Shannon Airport
The aircraft, identified as a C-130 Hercules, had reportedly flown from the US state of Kansas, made a stopover in Canada, and then landed at Shannon Airport on Friday before the incident occurred.
Reports say the individual managed to breach the airport’s perimeter fencing, accessed the area where the aircraft was stationed, climbed onto the plane, and struck its fuselage and wing with an axe.
The incident briefly disrupted airport activity, with operations reportedly suspended for around half an hour until armed police intervened and secured the scene.
Authorities confirmed that a man in his 40s was taken into custody, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Officials also stated that the aircraft sustained notable damage.
Separate reports indicate that US military aircraft stationed at Shannon Airport have been targeted in three similar incidents since last May.
